Online certificates: cybersecurity, data, project management and medical billing
Certificates can be a faster and cheaper route into a new field than a degree. Their value depends on whether employers recognize them.
Course certificate vs certification
A course certificate shows you completed a program. An industry certification is awarded after passing an exam set by an independent body, such as the PMP for project management or CompTIA exams for IT security. Employers often ask for the certification.
Cybersecurity
Entry-level certifications cover networking and security basics. Hands-on labs matter as much as the certificate.
Data analytics
Look for programs that teach spreadsheets, SQL and a visualization tool, and that include a portfolio project.
Project management
The PMP requires documented project experience. Entry-level certifications exist for people without that experience.
Medical billing and coding
Check that the program prepares you for a recognized credential exam, and whether it includes practice with real coding systems.
Judging value
Compare total cost, time to complete, exam fees, job placement support, and job postings in your area that list the credential.
