Home security systems: monitored, self-monitored or DIY?
Home security systems fall into three groups, and the main difference is who responds when an alarm goes off.
Professionally monitored
A monitoring center watches your system around the clock and contacts you or emergency services. You pay a monthly fee, and some providers require a contract. Some home insurers offer a discount for monitored systems, so ask yours.
Self-monitored
Alerts go to your phone and you decide what to do. There is no monthly monitoring fee, though cloud video storage often costs extra.
DIY installation
Many systems now install without tools in under an hour. You can usually add professional monitoring later without replacing hardware.
How to choose
Decide first whether you want someone else to respond. Then compare equipment cost, monthly fees, contract length, and what happens if you move.
