Buying a car: new deals, used cars and financing

TapTapSearch Editors · 2026-10-28

The sticker price is only the starting point. The price you pay depends on timing, incentives, financing and how well you prepare.

Know the real price

Research the invoice price and current manufacturer incentives. Ask dealers for an out-the-door price that includes all fees, taxes and add-ons, in writing.

Financing

Get a preapproval from a bank or credit union before visiting the dealer. It gives you a rate to compare against dealer financing. Look at the APR and total cost, not only the monthly payment.

Used cars

Get a vehicle history report, check recall status, and pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection. Certified pre-owned cars cost more but come with extended warranties.

No credit check dealers

Buy-here-pay-here dealers finance buyers with poor credit, but rates are often very high. Compare with credit unions and subprime lenders first, and read the contract carefully.

Trucks and SUVs

Prices on popular models vary by region and trim. Widen your search area and be flexible on color and options.
